My personal Research Journey
The topic that I chose for the simulation is how social emotional development in young children that may have been abused and how these factors may effect a child's behavior at school. I choose this research topic because I find it extremely interesting. I work with head start children. many of these children come from backgrounds that may not necessarily be ideal. As an educator I would like to find out some of the behaviors that are exhibited by children when they are abused and neglected. I think that information in a simulation will be very helpful for teachers so that they may identify some of the targeted behaviors and how to address them on a social emotional level.
According to the Child Welfare League of America, in Maryland alone, "In 2015, there were 6,790 victims of abuse or neglect in Maryland, a rate of 5.0 per 1,000 children, a a decrease 25.5% from 2014. Of these children, 59.7% were neglected, 22.7% were physically abused, and 23.8% were sexually abused."
I personally believe that even if one child is abused or neglected that it is travesty. So we as educators need to be prepared to receive these children and be ready and able to detect the signs and improve upon how we can assist these children and the behaviors that may come about if a child subjected to abuse or neglect.
