Valuing Culture

I interviewed three people and asked them about culture. I interviewed 24 year old Sireana who is a Christian, who does not have children and works in the health field. I interviewed 38 year old Damian who is a Muslim, with five children, who works in the transportation field and I interviewed 30 year old Cassandra who has no particular religious affiliation, and she is a mother of three who works in the field of contracting. Sireana said that she believes that the definition of culture would be the combination of tradition, morals, values, religion and ethnicity for human societies. She stated that every culture is based upon different things and has different beliefs.  Sireana also said that diversity is a mixture of societies mixing together. When I asked the questions to Damian, he said that culture is basically traditions of a people over a period of time. Damian stated that diversity is personal differences. Cassandra stated that when she thinks of culture she thinks of things like the art and food of a particular set of people. Cassandra stated that diversity is different ethnic groups of people.

The aspects of culture and diversity that were present in the answers that I received basically had to deal with ethnicity or race. With that being said, like myself, when I first began this course most people identify diversity with race and nothing more. I would have to say that culture is more broad and most people said art, religion or tradition. That definition falls in line with what we have been learning as well.  One of the aspects that had been omitted from Cassandra and Damian was the idea of religion in the definition of culture. I thought that this was interesting because Sireana who is a christian included religion in the definition.

After reviewing others' idea of diversity. i would have to say that they were just like I was when I started the course. I was not aware that diversity was way more in depth and basically describes a person and their place in the world and how people think of them and identify with them.
