Sharing Web Resources

The organization that I selected is the National Institute for Education Research. The website for this resource is www.nieer.org.  The primary focus of this organization is to conduct and analyze research that pertains to early childhood education. The purpose of the research that the organization conducts is to improve and monitor programs in the field of early childhood education.

One article in particular that stood out to me on the website was entitled States Lack Information, Policy for Young Dual Language Learners by Alexandra Figueras-Damiel. This article was very interesting to say the least. The article basically explained that states that are being allotted money to support young dual language learners (DLL), may not be utilizing the resources adequately. The author suggested that some states have not reported a correct number of dual language learners, so in that respect some children  may be missing out on assistance. In addition, the article says that many States do not even test the effectiveness of the programs that have been put in place for DLL. In addition, the article also suggests that only a portion of educators that work wit young dual language learners have specialized credentials that allow them to be more effective in teaching children that are trying to acquire the English Language.

I found the aforementioned article interesting because I think that dual language learners should be supported in every way possible. Also, I think that it is not beneficial to DLL students if the programs that are instituted have not been tested for effectiveness.

  1. I do believe that we miss some children that are DLL learners. In our small rural community we only have a handful of DLL learners. We do have a plan in place if we enroll a child that speaks a language other than English. We do not have any teachers that speck two language but we partner with or local public school if and when we need to communicate with parents and children.

  2. I believe that it is important for us to support DLL children. It is important to help them achieve just like anyone else. It can also be beneficial together children as well. If we have DLL learners in the same class that speak the same language this can help other children learn a different language and expand their learning.
