My Connections to Play
Play represented for me:
Essential Play Items for my younger self:
When I was younger people, mostly, your parents supported play by encouraging outside time. After school, I would do my homework and then head outside to play with my friends. We would play cooperative games such as hide and seek and tag. We would also ride bikes and do cheers in the neighborhood. My parents would often tell me to go out and play and give me a set time to come in. The time was usually, when the lights on the street lamps came on. I was an only child, so I had every toy and game imaginable. My parents would also encourage me to invite friends over to play games, like Monopoly, Operation, and The Game of Life. My friends and I also played the Uno card game frequently.
I feel that play now is much different from when I was a child. I feel that children are inside more, and have limited physical activity. I feel that children should engage in more outdoor play. When I was a child, children played video games, but not nearly as much as children do now. I feel that social interaction amongst children is limited, because not many of them go outside often.I really hope that future generations of children will begin to explore outdoor activities and socialization. I think that sitting in the house not as beneficial as going outdoors and engaging in activity.
Play was really an important part throughout my life. This has moved into adulthood as well. I enjoy games now such as card games and other cooperative games such as monopoly , charades , and pictionary. My friends and i have adult game nights where we all socialize and engage in play. In addition, I have introduced my daughter to cooperative games such as Operation, and card games such as Old Maid. I also encourage her to go outdoors and ride her bike or scooter. We also play hopscotch outdoors with chalk.
